CHRISTCHURCH BED & BREAKFAST DESIGNER COTTAGE

Designer Cottager opened in 2001 as a bed and breakfast style accommodation. Landscape architect and owner, Chet Wah had bought it that year “for its vintage charm [and] soon realised the significant history of the house.” Built in Sydenham around 1900, the private home was once an important part of Christchurch’s early settlement. Wah said his aim is to give a “friendly B&B experience to friendly visitors who want to explore Christchurch’s culture, history, landscape, community.” He wanted to provide tourists with a sense of place that could only be seen or experienced through a space that made local heritage the hero, complete with resident cat, Marmite.

“Our intention is to preserve as many character buildings as we possibly can in a block. Guests experience old Sydenham heritage cottages, help us keep this established community together and preserve the important fabric of the cultural landscape,” said Wah.

Shanghai traveller and TripAdvisor user MisterSharkey was looking for accommodation within walking distance of the central city and found his experience with Designer Cottage did not disappoint.

“We were unprepared for how lovely and accommodating our stay was. A series of lovingly restored historic railway workers cottages are connected by beautiful, professionally designed and immaculately maintained gardens. [It was] a really delightful last night in New Zealand,” he said.
